Is Your Website Mobile-Friendly for Google Search Results?
Starting April 21, 2015, Google started to include the mobile-friendliness of a website in determining its search engine ranking. What this means for you is if your website is Not mobile-friendly, your search engine rankings will suffer and lower. Today, over 56% of users are using mobile browsers to search the web. We are living in a time where responsive design is crucial and an important factor in assuring that your search engine visibility remains high. In the USA, 94% of people with smartphones search for local information on their phones *. Interestingly, 77% of mobile searches occur at home or at work, places where desktop computers are likely to be present.
We were inspired to write this article because guess what? We spent hours and hours creating a beautiful responsive design for our own company and had seen a drop in our rankings. Once we started troubleshooting by starting with Google’s Free Mobile Friendly Test, we discovered that Google determined that our website was not mobile friendly! What? We used a responsive WordPress theme and incorporated Google’s recommendations for mobile-friendliness, what could be the problem? Well, it came down to one blocked resource, our robots.txt file. We discovered our robots.txt file was configured to block most of the WordPress folders containing resources to make the website adapt to mobile browsers. Once we deleted the code blocking resources, like magic the site became mobile-friendly again! Woohoo! But not so fast with the party hats. We still needed to make sure Google Search was seeing our updated robots.txt file. We logged in to Google Analytics and resubmitted the robots.txt file for inclusion into the search engine. Google describes some of the most common mistakes webmasters make when designing for mobile.
